Can I apply for naturalization early?
Yes, some Lawful Permanent Residents (also known as “Green Card holders”) can apply for naturalization after THREE (3) years of becoming a permanent resident, while others must wait FIVE (5) years.
Lawful Permanent Residents who received their Green Cards through marriage to a U.S. citizen, can apply for naturalization after THREE (3) years of becoming a permanent resident as long as they are still married and are cohabitating with the same U.S. citizen spouse until the time of their U.S. naturalization interview.
This means if the naturalization applicant separates or divorces their U.S. citizen spouse before the naturalization interview, most likely the naturalization application will be denied.
Note: Unfortunately, if the U.S. citizen spouse is deceased, the naturalization applicant must wait FIVE (5) years before applying for naturalization.
