What is a Medical Power of Attorney?
A medical power of attorney gives allows you to give another person (known as “attorney-in-fact” or “agent”) the ability to make healthcare decisions for you.
A medical power of attorney gives the attorney-in-fact authority to make medical treatment decisions for you, if you become mentally or physically unable to make your own decisions. These are the most common situations when a medical power attorney is helpful:
- A person becomes ill with a disease that impairs their ability to make healthcare decisions
- A person has an accident and falls into a coma
- A person has a brain injury or stroke and is temporarily unable to make healthcare decisions
A medical power of attorney should not be confused with general, durable, or limited power of attorney. A medical power of attorney does not take the place of a living Will.
